Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Servicing the Eaton M45 supercharger

When I bought the Mini, it had reached the 160.000km or 100.000 miles mark. This is a milestone in the Mini Cooper S service history, because it means that you need to service the Eaton M45 supercharger (new fresh supercharger oil etc etc).

I saw the episode from Wheeler Dealers and felt confident. It was a lot of work, but fortunately it wasn’t complex. As this isn’t my daily driver, I meant I could take the time.

I also replaced the supercharger coupler with a new oil filled nylon coupler (in red).

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Vacuum Gain System VGS Modification

As usual, the Mini Cooper S with the Eaton M45 supercharger also has a bypass valve, which helps with fuel economy and lighten the load on the supercharger during idling (for instance). On NAM (North American Motoring forum) I noticed a popular mod, which is also known as the VGS or Vacuum Gain System modification.

Basically, the VGS mod changes the way the Bypass valve is operated. From indirect vacuum to direct vacuum, allowing faster response of the butterfly valve, but also keeping it shut better so no boost is lost.

I liked it in the beginning, but it makes for a rough driving experience. So in the end I reverted and never went back. Thats why we experiment 🙂

Volvo S80 2.4T Pierburg TCV 7.22908.03.0

Replaced the Aliexpress Pierburg valve with a brand new original Pierburg unit. These are also known as the “Porsche” TCV and sold by ARDideas. Must have part for about 20-30 euro.

The difference is noticeable, especially when driving with half throttle.

Seat Leon 1M 1.8T 20VT 240BHP 380Nm – Seat Online Brabomeeting 26-05-2019

Made some flyby shots of Sander’s Seat Leon 1M 1.8T 20VT with Stage 1 tune (240BHP 380Nm). The car is stripped and equipped with some good supporting mods like a 3″ stainless downpipe + stainless catback and lightweight OZ Ultraleggeras with Nankang NS2R Semi Slicks.

Volvo S80 2.4T ProPerfekt CBV / Diverter / Blowoff Valve

I actually wasn’t planning to upgrade the OEM Compressor Bypass Valve (CBV), but I am glad I decided to do so with this ProPerfekt piston type Diverter Valve (DV).

The rubber rings don’t leak (so much) boost, which means the power output is better (and faster) compared to the stock CBV. The stock CBV has a rubber outer ring (diaphragm) and a plastic ring on the inside (this is the flaw in the design).

The ProPerfekt DV is a known mod with the Renault Megane RS drivers, but I haven’t seen it before on another Volvo forum. The results are clear to me, the boost buildup is quicker, which means the car is faster. I would recommend this mod to anyone who has a TD04 turbo (who is still using the stock CBV). My S80 has the TD04HL-13T turbo, but will also fit the TD04HL-16T. Please note that the CBV I had fitted is quite new, so no ruptured diaphragm or something.

I noticed some strange behaviour when lifting the throttle and decided to service the CBV aka Compressor Bypass Valve. I was right, car drives a lot better after replacing it with a fresh CBV / DV (Diverter Valve).

I went with an aftermarket TRITDT K5T09671.

VW Golf MK3 GTI, Maintenance time

Performed some big maintenance work on the Golf GTI as this was highly needed. Always feels good when it has been done, in a nutshell:

  • Oil change (5W40)
  • Brake fluid change (DOT 4)
  • Fuel filter change
  • Oil filter change
  • New PCV / Oil Seperator valve
  • New Ignition coil
  • New Coolant Temperature sensor
  • New Air filter element
  • New interior filter (active carbon filter)
  • New Bosch Aerotwin Wiper blades

Carbon motorkap, Cobra Catback, Cold Side DV kit en HD filmen

Ik heb in de tussentijd niet stilgezeten m.b.t. het upgraden van mn nieuwe auto (Seat Leon 1.8T 20VT), zo was mn einddemper lek en is er na veel reviews lezen, foto’s en video’s kijken gekozen voor een Cobrasport RVS Catback systeem (2.75″ diameter), met 3″ ovalen sierstuk. Voor een fractie van de prijs van een Milltek en vergelijkbare systemen, krijg je een hoge kwaliteits uitlaat, de lasnaden zien er erg goed uit en het geluid wat eruit komt is oorstrelend. Ahhhh 🙂

Een filmpje kan niet ontbreken!

Daarnaast heb ik via marktplaats een mooie deal kunnen sluiten en had ik opeens een Carbon motorkap. Paste nog maar net in de auto, heb ongeveer een kleine anderhalf uur opgevouwen gezeten om het spul naar Cromvoirt te krijgen. Winst: 5kg minder aan dood gewicht en luchtin- en uitlaten. Ben in ieder geval een apartere verschijning 😉

Two Brothers

Om de respons van de DV (Diverter Valve) te verhogen en de inkomende lucht te koelen, heb ik ervoor gekozen om een zogenaamde Cold Side DV relocation kit te kopen van de heren van Creations Motorsport. Hoge kwaliteits siliconenslang en nette, complete levering inc slangklemmen en 90 graden bocht. Zie hieronder de voor en na foto’s. Heb er nog te weinig mee gereden om het echte verschil te merken.

Het idee vond ik op Reddit, waarbij het in bepaalde landen heel normaal is om een camera in de auto te hebben (bewijs voor verzekerig etc). Na een lange zoektocht op eBay heb ik uiteindelijk gekozen voor onderstaand model, die leek mij het meest geschikt. Zoek maar eens op eBay met de termen: “car cam dash dvr”, veel succes! De camera kan in 1080i en 720p opneme, bij 720p kan de camera op 30fps filmen. Eerste indrukken zijn goed, audiokwaliteit kan beter, maar ben vooralsnog erg positief.
