Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Replacing the 722.6 Gearbox Conductor Plate & Transmission Fluid Refresh

As part of the big preventative maintenance, I swapped out the conductor plate for the 5-speed 722.6 automatic torque converter gearbox (which is pretty much bulletproof) and also did a fluid refresh. Its almost impossible to get all the fluid out, that is done better with a flush (done with specialist equipment).

10 liters of LiquiMoly Top Tec 1800 ATF fluid
Febi Bilstein Transmission service kit (gasket, filter, bolts, drain plug, copper washer, connector)

I replaced almost 6 liters, the rest remains in the system off course in the coolers and the rest of the transmission plumbing. Maybe somewhere next year do this again, but also replace all/some solenoids and go to a transmission specialist.

Pro tip: Transmission adaptation reset is mandatory! I used method 2 of the video below




Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Front Suspension Refresh

When doing previous work below the car, I noticed some original suspension components, which attributes to bad driving behaviour. As I intend to drive this car for a while, I made the decision to refresh the front suspension for now.

The work is not that complex and can be done by the DIY mechanic, but take your time.

All the front suspension components which will be replaced (thrust arms, wishbones, inner+outer tie rods, lower ball joints)

Also added the upper ball joints, as this was an easy swap!

Unfortunately, I received the wrong ball joints. Ordered new ones, which brought some delay
Also, the special tie rod tool I own, did not have the correct size (41mm required). So I decided to replace these in a later stage
Applied some fresh ballbearing grease on the inner tie rods.

Also, way too much copper grease on these bolts, which is weird. These bolts are not known to seize…

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Ball Joint Special Tool

As preparation of refrshing the front suspension, I bought the special tool to press out (and in) the ball joints which are housed in the knuckle on the W211/W219 platform.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Replacing Roof Window Trim

The roof window trim had seen beter days. On both sides, the “curtains” were torn, which is something that annoyed me very much as the CLS is a luxury car.

Bought 2 new trim pieces from Mercedes, they were quite easy to replace. Start from the outside of the car with the window tilted. You should then be able to lift out the trim pieces and then continue from the inside. On the front of the roof window, a hard plastic piece keeps the trimpieces in place with a small notch.

Looks way better after replacing it!

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Repairing The Airmatic Compressor to Valveblock Airline

My MacGuyver method for repairing the airline did not hold out very long, so I needed something structurally. Fortunately, Mercedes sells a piece of airline (1.5m) for repairing/maintaining the Airmatic system, which was exactly what I needed.

I found some hose which fitted around the airline perfectly (also for extra safety against rubbing)



Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Heatwrapping The Intake Tubes

A mod which has been tested on MBworld already, heatwrapping the intake tubes to keep as much heat out of them as possible. I had white heatwrap lying around, so I used that 🙂

Small supporting mod and a very easy DIY.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Leaking Rocker Cover Gasket (Again)

Last time I will be using gaskets from Febi Bilstein as the rocker cover started leaking again around cilinder 4. Replaced it with a Viktor Reinz gasket. If it will leak again, I will buy them from the Mercedes dealer.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Vinyl Steering Wheel Cover

I love a thicker steering wheel and a simple way to do it is with a steering wheel cover. I have done this mod a number of times on previous cars with great succes, and this one worked out great as well. Very happy with the result, as it gives way more grip.

On pictures it looks like a big color difference, but in reality its not that bad. I have chosen a black inlay and black yarn, as a color would look out of place.
