Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – New Downstream O2 Sensor

Replaced the O2 sensor with a fresh new one from Vemo. I totally forgot that the Mini Cooper has 2x O2 sensors 🙂 Don’t forget that O2 sensors have a replacement interval which is usually somewhere between 160.000 – 250.000 km.

Update per 01-01-2021: I replaced the Vemo with a new O2 sensor from Magneti Marelli. The Vemo already started giving issues after a short while. It will be the last time that I will be using Vemo.

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Sitting in the driveway

Snapped a picture of the Mini sitting in the driveway. I love this car 🙂

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Airbox Intake Modification

I wanted to replace the stock air pipe, as it contains a resonator which keeps it silent. It’s also not optimised, leaving room for improvement.

Used 2 aluminium joiners/couplers and flexible piping. Very happy with this cost effective result! Also, I love the supercharger whine 🙂

I also ordered a K&N RU-3190 filter, I didn’t know the previous owner fitted a Pipercross PX1875. In the end I sold the K&N as the fitment wasn’t good.

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Vacuum Gain System VGS Modification

As usual, the Mini Cooper S with the Eaton M45 supercharger also has a bypass valve, which helps with fuel economy and lighten the load on the supercharger during idling (for instance). On NAM (North American Motoring forum) I noticed a popular mod, which is also known as the VGS or Vacuum Gain System modification.

Basically, the VGS mod changes the way the Bypass valve is operated. From indirect vacuum to direct vacuum, allowing faster response of the butterfly valve, but also keeping it shut better so no boost is lost.

I liked it in the beginning, but it makes for a rough driving experience. So in the end I reverted and never went back. Thats why we experiment 🙂

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW – Starting a new Project

Last year, we were all affected by the pandemic. But even in such strange times, positive things happen. Like me buying a Mini Cooper S, which I wanted to drive for quite some time. I noticed one in the trim that I wanted and went ahead with it.

Looked even better than on the pictures in the advert & was fitted with extra’s like:

  • Carbon GP bumper inserts
  • Carbon handle
  • Carbon JCW hood scoop
  • Carbon Mini R56 spoiler
  • Chrono pack interior
  • LED Angel Eyes
  • LED amber indicators
  • Dechromed exterior trim
  • MSD Coilpack & HT leads
  • 17″ R113 Black / Chrome wheels

A lot of work already has been done, this will be documented as well. Stay tuned 🙂

Thanks to my buddy Joost Evers of Hobbygarage Evers for helping me out!

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW Gravity Performance eBay Exhaust

Some video footage of the Gravity Performance eBay exhaust I bought for my 2006 Mini Cooper S R53 Works edition (210BHP).

The JCW catback exhaust was a little too quiet for my liking, so took a gamble and went with the Gravity Performance exhaust with the carbon tips. Very happy with this exhaust, good quality welds, the carbon tips blend in very will with the other pieces of carbon trim I already have (GP bumper inserts, R56 JCW Roof Spoiler & carbon Latch).

Unfortunately, my video focus should’ve been better. Maybe do it all over again soon 🙂

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW Heatwrapped Stainless Exhaust

I heatwrapped the new stainless steel Gravity Performance catback exhaust. Unfortunately I ran out of titanium heatwrap, so I ordered some more (black) and finished the job.

It will help with scavenging and is a supporting mod for extracting more horsepower and torque from the Mini.

Mini Cooper S R53 JCW Gravity Performance eBay Exhaust

Bought myself a stainless catback exhaust for my Mini Cooper S R53 Works, as I found the original John Cooper Works catback a little timid for my liking. The JCW catback sounds good, but I know the Mini can sound better 🙂

I took a gamble with the Gravity Performance, a shop which I found on eBay. I noticed the real carbon tips, which looked awesome on pictures and should tie in good with the black/carbon theme I already have.

I’m glad I chose the Gravity Performance exhaust, quality welds, good clamps and awesome carbon tips. Check my video review on Youtube, which also has a small comparison with the JCW catback > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJC8XYb1rPw

For now, enjoy the pictures!

Fotoshoot : Brillen featuring Karlijn
