Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, How To Replace The TCU

When I searched for a step-by-step video for replacing the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), I could not find one for the CLS. Therefore I created one myself, to help out others who want/need to swap out this unit.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Andreas Kawula Built My Engine!

With help of a forum member on Seat-Online.nl, I was able to find out that Andreas Kawula hand built the magnificent supercharged V8 in my CLS55 AMG. His signature is very hard to decipher, but the internet delivers again and verified that his name is indeed Andreas Kawula.

Fun fact: only the 55 & 63 engines were hand built. So a big thank you from the Netherlands, Andreas 🙂 !

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, New Intake Pipes (Gold Tape Heatwrap)

Noticed that one of the plastic intake tubes was broken, so I replaced them both. Fortunately, the intake pipes only costs 11 euro per piece, which is a steal!

I added gold plated tape, to fend of radiating heat and keep the incoming air as cool as possible. Took quite some time and effort, but I am happy with the end result and how it looks in the engine bay.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Special Tool For Replacing Engine Mounts

Bought a special tool, which is particularly handy when replacing the engine mounts on a CLS55 W219 or E55 W211. The exhaust manifold takes a fair bit of space on each side of the engine and there is where this tool comes in handy with removing the bolt which sits directly under the exhaust manifold (on each side).

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Upgrade To Hella LED Side Lights T10

With the upgrade to new Osram Xenarc Classic bulbs, I wanted to replace the W5W/T10 halogen side lights, as they simply look out of place.

After a extensive review of Sergiu Gabor, I opted for the Hella LED Retrofit bulbs. Fitment is 100%, they are canbus friendly (no errors) and they give a nice white uniform light, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Upgrade To LED License Plate Lights

Converted the license plate lights to LED units (thanks to Aliexpress). Instantly gives the car a more modern look. I applied some dark window tint film, to tone down the intensity. Too much LED light gives off a “chav” image, which is something I want to prevent at all times.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Forgot How Wide The Rear Tyres Are…

I had to do an visual inspection of the rear airbags of the Airmatic system and when I looked at the rear tyre, I totally forgot how wide they are…They should be, else it would be very hard to get all that power on the floor!

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, iCarsoft Diagnostics v3.0

A DIY mechanic wants and needs to know all about their car, and a proper diagnostics program/unit is therefore invaluable. I opted for the iCarsoft Diagnostics unit v3.0. I will probably look into Xentry/DAS in the near future, but having this small powerful device in the car is a godsend.

Its powered by the car, so essentially hassle free! Don’t forgot to update the unit using the software on the iCarsoft website.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Replacing the Supercharger Pulley Bearing (Nachi)

I decided to replace the supercharger pulley bearing with a fresh new Japan made Nachi bearing. One of the easiest way is the hot/cold method, where you heat up the pulley and freeze the bearing itself. This results in the bearing sliding into the pulley with relative ease.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, New Coolant Expansion Reservoir Cap & Oil Filler Cap

2 Items which are forgotten very easily in routine maintenance; the coolant expansion reservoir cap and the oil filler cap. The coolant cap is spring loaded cap (mechanical component (!)), which is usually set to 1.1 BAR, to allow the coolant to vent whenever the pressure is too high. But when it vents too fast (spring lost tension), the coolant system is not able to operate efficiently.

Therefore its a good habit of changing these out every now and then. For the couple of euros, it should not be forgotten.

I also swapped out the oil filler cap, as this was leaking/seeping out a little bit of oil.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Osram Xenarc Classic D2S HID Bulbs

Thanks to Sergiu Gabor, I found out that these Osram Xenarc Classic bulbs almost perform as well as the Xenarc Night Breaker Laser bulbs. The Night Breaker Laser bulbs cost about 80-90 euro, where the Xenarc Classic bulbs only cost about 40-50 euro.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Air Intake Flaps Modification

Made a small modification to the intake flaps, by removing a small portion of them. This should, in theory, make sure that air is able to enter the intake pipes directly (instead of indirectly).

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Rear Tail Light Cluster LED Conversion Impossible!

I wanted to do a full LED conversion for the real tail light cluster, but it seems Mercedes made something proprietary. In other words, the bulbs of the rear light cluster are not serviceable, like any other normal car…If one fails, you need to replace the complete board with all the bulbs.

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, Aligning Door Windows

The CLS has a common issue with the window not sealing properly against the door frame. When this happens, water and dirt/debris is able to get in the cabin. But it also introduces a lot of wind noise, which is not something which fits the luxury of this car.

To fix it, you need to undo 1 bolt in the door. I believe its a 10mm bolt which enables you to adjust the tilt of the window. Mine needed tilt more to allow for proper sealing again. I used a 1/4″ ratchet with a long extension. Its recommended to remove the trim to see what you are doing.

The bolt is accessible through the round rubber grommet in the door, but is hard to locate without removing the upper door trim.

This is a great, free fix!

Mercedes CLS55 AMG W219, a new chapter

Sold the Mini Cooper S R53 JCW not too long ago to pursue my dream of driving a V8 powered car with a lot of muscle.

I have been investigating for over a year what I really wanted to drive. Started with the E55 AMG W211, but the looks (especially the interior) looked a bit dated to me. Until I found out that the W219 chassis had the same engine in it, the CLS55 AMG.

I found one close by (there were only 3 on sale at the time) and after a good chat with the owner and a marvellous testdrive, I bought it. Absolutely love the car! A lot of maintenance has already been done by me and a lot still has to be done. Im happy with somewhere between 500 and 600BHP, but that is something for later.
