Volvo S80 2.4T, time for a change…

The Golf MK3 GTI showed some big signs of rust, which jeopardized my APK (MOT) status for this year. Simply put, I had 2 choices,

  • Invest quite some money in the Golf MK3 GTI for solving the rust issues and keep driving
  • Swap/sell it straightaway and drive something else

Wishlist

I have chosen for the latter as the title already suggests. But what is a proper replacement for the Golf MK3 GTI which also falls into budget? Needles to say, I needed a wishlist to get to some conclusion…I ended up with this:

  1. More than 4 cilinders
  2. More power than the GTI
  3. No VAG car
  4. More luxury than the GTI
  5. Bigger than the GTI
  6. Optional: automatic gearbox

Result

I ended up with a Volvo S80 from 2001 with a 5 cilinder (2.4 liters) turbocharged engine. It ticks all the boxes, except for my optional item (#6), as it has stick shift. It isn’t bad, but a automatic gearbox would complement the car even more. Let the pictures speak for itself!

Vw Golf MK3 GTI, Repaint All The Trim

As the car is quite old, the plastic trim of the car has been exposed to the influence of the sun for countless of times, which greys out the once black plastic trim. I decided to repaint it all, as the grey trim is just plain ugly. The most work was to mask of the rest of the car, the rest was easy 🙂

VW Golf MK3 GTI, New Fuel Pump

As the car is about 21 years old, it was about time the fuel pump was renewed. A fuel pump gets old and will be unable to deliver the desired fuel pressure when needed. This will have a big impact on the performance as you might imagine. It took me quite some time as the retaining ring was stuck, like real stuck…

I was finally able to prise it of, but needed to perform some cleaning before putting in the new pump. But it was worth it!

VW Golf MK3 GTI, Hifonics HFI250A MKII Subwoofer

Missed a lot of bass in the Golf MK3, so decided to add some in the form of a subwoofer. I normally dont add one, but I felt it was essential in this car, as my normal speaker setup was unable to provide me with it. Found a nice Hifonics HFI250a subwoofer nearby and needed a wirekit, before I could test it.

Result: Awesome bass 🙂 Highly recommended

Also, I love the “Power From Gods” note on it hehe

VW Golf MK3 GTI, New VW Hubcaps

A small mod with big impact, replacing the old worn hubcaps with fresh new caps. I bought them cheap from eBay.

VW Golf MK3 GTI, Steering Wheel Cover

Bought a steering wheel cover, as the steering wheel had seen better days. I have done this mod a couple of times before and was always happy with the result, so no hesitation this time 🙂 Again very pleased with the results. Costs about 5 USD from Aliexpress. I chose black faux leather with red stitching for the VW Golf.

VW Golf MK3 GTI, New Ridex Brake Pads

Fitted some fresh new Ridex brake pads for the front. They are quite cheap, but they brake properly.

Ditched the old stock system and bought myself a stainless system from TA Technix, which was very easy on the wallet and looked the part. Fitment was a bit of a ball ache as some modding was required, but looks good in the end (also sounds nicely btw).

VW Golf MK3 GTI, Maintenance time

Performed some big maintenance work on the Golf GTI as this was highly needed. Always feels good when it has been done, in a nutshell:

  • Oil change (5W40)
  • Brake fluid change (DOT 4)
  • Fuel filter change
  • Oil filter change
  • New PCV / Oil Seperator valve
  • New Ignition coil
  • New Coolant Temperature sensor
  • New Air filter element
  • New interior filter (active carbon filter)
  • New Bosch Aerotwin Wiper blades
  • New Brake pads front + back

VW Golf MK3 GTI, Airbox Mod

Performed the swiss cheese mod, or wak box / wakbox or whatever you want to call it to the lower part of the airbox. Sounds a little bit better & seems to have a little impact on the butt dyno.

VW Golf MK3 GTI Mesh Grille

Bought a new grille (without the VW logo), but I didn’t want the one with the double louvres, as that has been tried and tested. I noticed this one from JOM and ordered it. Got a message back from a Dutch webshop that they aren’t able to deliver anymore. Searched and found it on German Ebay, for less than price that the Dutch webshop advertised it for, so happy days 🙂

Time for a new car, VW Golf MK3 GTI 2.0 8v

And then it was time for a change, a new car. But it didn’t go smoothly, not at all. I traded my 2009 Toyota Aygo with a Volkswagen (VW) Golf MK3 GTI 2.0 8v (1996, AGG engine code), after having an extended test drive which didn’t show any weird signs. Car handled nicely, especially for that age.

But on the way back it broke down, RPM gauge dropped instantly and car died (electrics worked though). Long story short, I was pulled back home and was able to fix the issue a day or two later by swapping out the Crankshaft Position sensor (G28) and as a precaution, I also swapped out the Fuel Pump Relay (nr 30).

So a little bit of a headache & mixed feelings later, I am still very happy with my swap!
